The Minneapolis-based chamber choir MPLS (imPulse) is currently holding a composition competition with three rounds. The first round was completed in December, 2016, with the performance in February. I am honored to announce that my submission, Out of the River of Tuoni, was the selected winner! MPLS (imPulse) is a fantastic ensemble that is really pushing the choral arts in new directions. They are fantastic advocates for new music with a vision of ‘redefining the choral experience’ for the singers and audience members. Serving this purpose, Continue reading →
My composition O Cool is the Valley Now has been selected for performance on Monday October 21 at the 2013 Aries Composers Festival! The three-day festival is hosted by Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, and will include several new compositions by composers from all across the country (many of whom seem to have their doctorates and several major performances already!), and the featured Guest Composer will be Michael Colgrass. Needless to say, I feel very honored by this opportunity to have my music performed Continue reading →
This past weekend was the VocalEssence 2013 Essentially Choral program. I spent the weekend rehearsing and discussing my composition Missa Brevis pro Pace with the VocalEssence Chamber singers, director Philip Brunelle, assistant director Sigrid Johnson, and visiting composer-mentor Francisco Núñez, as well as the compositions by five other composers. It was a great experience which culminated in a public reading of our six pieces on Saturday morning. I learned a lot over the weekend. I received a lot of advice, and I was able to critique my Continue reading →
I have been chosen to participate in VocalEssence‘s 2013 Essentially Choral Reading Session. Essentially Choral is a program in which up to seven “emerging composers” from around the country are chosen to bring “works-in-progress” (definition: anywhere from currently-being-written to unpremiered) to be publicly read and recorded by the VocalEssence Ensemble Singers (the more selective, smaller ensemble within VocalEssence). The composers will have a chance to rehearse with the ensemble for two days prior to the reading, and there will be mentoring sessions with artistic director Philip Brunelle and composer/conductorFrancisco Núñez and professional Continue reading →
This summer I submitted two pieces to the 2011 Minnesota Music Educators Association Collegiate Composition Contest. I finally received word of the results, and my two submissions, O Cool is the Valley Now and Four Bagatelles for Clarinet and Piano, tied for second place in the chamber ensemble division. I hope that this is a fairly good sign, considering that this is the first contest I have ever entered. I am, of course, planning to enter more competitions in the future.
Back in June I put two compositions in the mail, sending them in for the MMEA Collegiate Composition Contest. Surprisingly this is the first composition contest I’ve ever entered. The first composition I sent is O Cool is the Valley Now which was performed in April for the Chamber Ensemble category. The other composition I sent in is Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano, a newly revised version of my Three Short Pieces for Clarinet and Piano, in the Solo Instrument category. I decided that rather than calling them separate short Continue reading →
